Community Service

H.E.L.P. Program

(Hope Every day for the Lord's Planet)

A National Award-Winning Program

Nativity Catholic School's HELP Program consists of several community service activities that are implemented throughout the school year. The purpose of the program is to provide the students with an awareness of the needs in the community and to develop a sense of responsibility to assist with these needs.

In July 2000, Nativity Catholic School was selected as one of three elementary schools in the nation by the NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) as a recipient of the SPICE Award (Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education). The award recognized Nativity's HELP Program as an outstanding program for integrating Catholic social teaching into all aspects of Catholic education.

Components of the HELP Program include:

  • Mother Teresa Week

Specific items such as canned foods, clothing, bedding, toiletries, etc. are collected daily for one week and delivered by the Student Council to the Sisters of Charity in Miami.
  • Adopt-A-Family

Each homeroom class "adopts" a needy family. During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, the students in the class send gift baskets to the families and help to make their wishes come true.
  • Pennies From Heaven

Students collect pennies in the fall. The pennies are presented at a special mass and donated to the local Respect Life organization. Since 1995, Nativity students have donated over $100,000.00 in pennies to help mothers and their babies!!
  • Earth Week

Students participate in different projects each year during Earth Week to raise awareness of the environment and the world around them. The week's activities culminate with a beautiful outdoor mass at the Shrine in celebration of our earth and its resources. Environmental Awareness
  • Past projects have included:

The entire student body has participated in an "Earth Walk" around Chaminade Drive.
Students have saved energy on one of the days of Earth Week by turning off all electricity. Many classes were held outdoors on blankets and picnic tables.
Students have raised money to donate to Heifer International to buy farm animals for needy families around the world.
Students have sold energy-efficient light bulbs and used the profits to buy trees in the forests (American Forest Association).
Students have raised money by reading books and donating the profits to purchase acres of land in the rainforest. The elementary school hallways were turned into a simulated rainforest!
Students created life-size animal paintings which were photographed and displayed on t-shirts. The t-shirts were sold and the monies were donated to assist with specific environmental issues such as the Everglades, the Lighthouses, and endangered animals. The governor of the state of Florida visited Nativity and spoke to the students about the environment. (He also purchased a t-shirt!)

Community Service Learning Program

All Nativity Catholic School Junior High students are required to perform a specified amount of service hours and reflect on their good work as part of their religion curriculum.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION & FAMILY MASSES

  • Spiritual Formation

We believe that all education must lead to the development of a mature and personal relationship with Our Lord Jesus Christ. Emphasis is placed on instruction in the classroom, a common prayer life, participation in Mass and the sacraments, and community service. The program includes, but is not limited to, the following:

At the opening of each school day, there is a school-wide prayer and pledge of allegiance.
Each religion class begins with a prayer or moment of spiritual reflection.
School masses for all students are held monthly. Older students attend Mass weekly.
The weekend Family Mass allows student involvement in various church ministries as well as class-level participation. Special Masses such as May Crowning and Pennies From Heaven will be held throughout the year.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is held several times a year.
During the school year, various religious programs including Stations of the Cross, presentations, retreats, and special guest speakers from the community may supplement the Religion program.
Prayer Partners: Older students in the 7th and 8th grades are paired with younger students from the 1st and 2nd grades. They sit together at mass and share their faith during special activities throughout the year.
  • Mass Attendance

Mass attendance is required of all Catholic families. You are welcome to join us at our Family Masses on Saturdays at 5:00 PM. Mass attendance is a gift that you will give your child for his/her lifetime. Teachers will review the Sunday gospel and sermons every Monday with their students. Your child should be prepared to participate in these discussions.
  • Sacrament Preparation

Students are prepared for the following sacraments in their religion classes throughout the year:

    First Communion: Second Grade
    First Reconciliation: Second Grade
    Confirmation: Eighth Grade
  • Family Masses

Every Saturday at 5:00 PM during the school year, our Nativity families are welcome to celebrate in a unique liturgy geared towards our children. The church becomes alive with worship and inspiring music. Parishioners are greeted as they enter the church by our younger children. The student lectors read all of the parts of the mass and the ushers assist with the collection. Each class takes several turns throughout the year to host the mass.

Students may take part in various ministries. These include:
    Altar Server - grades 3-8
Choir - Nativity Singers grades 5-8
    Greeters - grades 2-3
    Lectors - grades 6-8
    Ushers - grades 6-8
